Well, wait....my fans dropped and then, they've gone back up. However, I have never joined the beta group and the increase in fans was more than recent visitors.

Yeah, it does now. But I dropped down below the "accurate number"; had two visitors (neither of which thumbed me); and then picked up three fans.
