| elledark | May 12, 7:31pm | This could very easily be a dumb question, but oh well ..:)
I was at a site tonight ... it was actually a video out-take of some prominent network 'news' person making some typically stupid and politically biased remarks. The quality of the video was fine, vision and sound quality good and it admirably made the point that the poster intended (that the 'news' guy in question was an idiot). So thumbs up for presentation and execution ? But the fact is I think that particular 'news' guy is a real disgrace to journalism and what he was actually saying was obnoxious so I'd hate my 'thumbs-up' to be construed by anyone as approval for him. So thumbs down because of my personal bias ?
Thats maybe not the best example in the world but you get the idea. A thumb is a pretty crude instrument which, granted, you can qualify if you write a review but you have to thumb up or down first and thats the 'headline' feature. I was just curious if anyone else had the same dilemna ? It could equally well apply to SU sites I guess .. |

Staff | CH | May 12, 7:49pm | Someone used to have on their page words along these lines:
"a thumbs up does not signify approval of the content, it merely registers interest".
A thumbs-up says: I want to see more of these sites. That may be so that you can disagree with them, be angered by them, chuckle at them, whatever.. . that's your business. |

Sponsor | Karolinger | May 12, 7:56pm | | A thumbs up might also say, I want people to know how stupid is this thing instead of hiding it with a thumb down. You can also comment the page without a rating, in that way it's neutral and/or leaves you more time to think. Also people could read what you think, the message not totally hidden from others, and they can enter the site in question and decide for them self what they think about what you said and the site itself. |

That's it. StumbleUpon is about helping people to discover interesting content. |

Sponsor | Karolinger | May 12, 7:58pm | | But something you might don't like could be also interesting (for you and others). |

Staff | CH | May 12, 7:59pm | But others won't see stumble it if you add it then give it a 100% negative recommendation.
Asked and answered. ;o) |

| elledark | May 12, 8:27pm | | Interesting comments .. thanks. I suppose I (instinctively) associate the 'thumbs up' with signifying approval and hesitate to give it to anything I personally disapprove of , even if its well conceived and executed. But in hesitating I'm sometimes aware that others without my particular set of views (prejudices) might find the same site interesting or entertaining. I suppose there is no hard and fast answer in something thats essentially subjective ..:) Oh and Waschabad ? You can share my dilemma if you want ..:) |
